Important monuments and sites in the world

The International Day for Monuments and Sites is on April 18 each year around the world. The aim is to show people that there are thousands of sites and monuments all over the world and that we should protect and conserve them to keep our culture alive.


Let's see some important monumets around the world:

Machu Pichu is located in the city of Peru in South America. It is known that the construction of the city of Machu Pichu on the top of a mountain took 25 years. The most important buildings, such as the temple observatory and tombs, were placed on the top.



Great Sheikh Zayed Mosque  is in Abu Dhabi,in the United Arab Emirates . It is a mosque that was opened for worship in 2007.



The Qurtuba mosque is located in the city of Kurtuba, Spain. The mosque was built by I. Abdurrahman and started to be built in 785.


Taj Mahal is an Islamic religious building, mosque and tomb in India. It was built in the 17th century by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his dead wife, Mumtaz Mahal.


The Statue of Liberty, since 1924 a National Monument, is  a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. It is in The USA.


Chichén Itzá is a complex of Mayan ruins in  Mexico. A massive step pyramid, known as El Castillo or Temple of Kukulcan, dominates the ancient city, which thrived from around 600 A.D. to the 1200s. Stone carvings survive  like the ball court, Temple of the Warriors and the Wall of the Skulls. Night sound-and-light shows illuminate the buildings' sophisticated geometry.




The Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial is a war memorial commemorating the service of about 253,000 Turkish soldiers who participated at the Battle of Gallipoli, which took place from April 1915 to December 1915 during the First World War.
